This page will explain some of the website conventions and nomenclature adopted to assist in the user experience.
Language toggle – This website is bilingual, providing users with both English
and French
interpretation. Flags in the menu row permit users to toggle between languages anywhere in the website. Tip : By default, the home page of this website is in English, however, users may use www.petrieslanding2.ca/fr to display the page in French when launching. Users may also save this url address as a bookmark to launch the website in French in the future.
Menu – The site has a top-level menu to help users navigate. Each top-level menu item has sub-titles to choose from thereafter. When a page is selected, each of the sub-title sections will be shown in: “this page has the following sections” frame at the top of the page.
Search function – This feature is identified by the magnifying glass
to the right of the top-level menu and language toggle. Users can quickly identify pages or posts (news / bulletins) which contain the search word/phrase being looked for.
Login – This option is used to log in to the website. The greeting page (aka home page) is accessible to anyone on the internet. Further pages and information of the website are only available to those residents / owners who have logged in.
Logout – This option is used to log out of the website. This is important when you are using a computer shared by others. If not logged out, other users of the same computer would have access to the website after you.
Tool Tips – These are one or more word phrases which are dotted underline. When a cursor hovers over these words, a small pop-up appears providing more explanation to the phrase. (eg. Board of Directors)
Hyperlinks – These are identified as underlined, italicized, blue words or phrases which will take users to another page of information. Typically these other pages will appear in a new browser tab. (eg. www.petrieslanding2.ca)
Forms – Forms provide users assistance to complete requests. They guide users through the information gathering process. Collecting all the necessary information from the user, is important to process the request quicker and accurately.
Pop-ups – These are windows which appear on top of a page. They can be alerts, reminders or even forms. They simplify navigation and reduce the number of new browser tabs required. (eg. )
Accordions – These are a group/series of short phrases, when selected, will expand to offer more information (answers). This website uses this primarily for FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions). In this case the short phrases are questions and when selected, the expanded information are the answers.
Pictures – Pictures embedded into pages can be expanded by selecting them. If multiple pictures exists, the user will be able to scroll left or right through the gallery. The gallery has a set of controls in the upper right corner if users wish to expand or full screen the picture. Users can exit the gallery by selecting the “x” in the upper right corner of the picture.
Known issues – There are a few known issues with the website. Most of these involve untranslated words or phrases from English to French. (eg. emails generated from a form). Where possible, work around solutions have been implemented.
